Children's mattresses in different sizes

Choosing the right size of children's mattresses is easy, because almost all baby cot and children's bed manufacturers already specify the correct children's mattress size. Generally, children's mattresses come in four different sizes. The baby mattresses of most baby cots have a size of 70 x 140 cm. This is often also suitable for conversion or junior beds. However, there are also children's mattresses with a size of 60 x 1.20 or 70 x 1.60 cm. The next largest children's mattress then already has a size of 90 x 200 cm. Of course, there are also larger sizes that essentially correspond to those of an adult mattress.

Of course, it is important that the mattress chosen fits the cot or baby cot perfectly, i.e. that it does not bulge or leave gaps where the child could trap its arm or slip into an uncomfortable sleeping position.

Baby mattress materials

Especially for babies and children, it is of course particularly important that the children's mattress is absolutely free of harmful substances. Most children's mattresses are made of foam and do not have a so-called lying zone, as is usual with mattresses for adults. This is because children are much lighter than adults. In addition, the spine of the little ones does not have to be relieved as much.

Nevertheless, you must pay attention to the right firmness when buying. Ideally, the mattress should be neither too hard nor too soft. However, it must be robust. Especially for energetic toddlers, the mattresses have to withstand a lot.

Some children's mattresses have two different sides with different degrees of firmness. This has the advantage that you can simply turn the mattress over if necessary, as soon as the child has grown and thus become heavier.

The core of the mattresses should be breathable, because toddlers often sweat during sleep.

Washable cover for little mishaps

Especially practical and useful are children's mattresses that have a washable cover. Because it often happens that drinking bottles leak or a mishap happens as soon as nappies are dispensed with at night. With a removable and washable cover, all this is no problem and the child's mattress is protected.

Our tip: place a water-repellent pad between the cover and the mattress. This prevents the mattress itself from coming into contact with liquids of any kind. However, rubber mats or protective covers made of plastic should be avoided. A breathable protective cover with integrated moisture protection is optimal.

When should children's mattresses be replaced?

No mattress lasts forever - not even the children's mattress. For one thing, children grow incredibly fast and for this reason alone, the baby mattress or children's mattress for toddlers must be replaced at some point.

Typically, the first child's mattress purchased must be replaced after the age of five at the latest. To determine the right time to buy a new one, this little rule of thumb helps: As soon as the child has less than 10 cm of free space above the head and at the foot end, it is time to buy a bigger children's mattress.
